Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing breast-feeding practice of self-efficacy, breast-feeding attitude and knowledge.

Method: Participants were 206 mothers with a child within 6-24months in A city. Data were collected from November 15 to March 15, 2012. The instruments used were Self-efficacy Scale, Breast-feeding Attitude Scale, Breast-feeding Knowledge Scale and Rate of Breast-feeding Practice. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 computer program and included Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, and Multiple regression.

Result: Rate of breast-feeding above 6Months was 43.7%. R square changes of the significant predictors on breast-feeding practice were that occupation(R2=.026, p=.022) was 2.6% on step 1, time of breast-feeding decision(R2=.083, p=.001) was 5.8% on step 2, attitude toward breast-feeding, knowledge, and self-efficacy(R2=.256, p<001) were 12.8% on step 3. These variables explained 25.6% of the variance in breast-feeding practice.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that improvement of self-efficacy, attitude toward breast-feeding and knowledge will be helpful to increase breast-feeding practice of mothers.
